Course Diagrams

For use in sailing instructions below are most of the common varieties of course diagram.  With each, a course table will be necessary, such as:

O2   Start - 1 - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish
O3   Start - 1 - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish
O4   Start - 1 - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish

The convention for assigning signals to courses is:

  • The number relates to the number of beats in the course.
  • An inner trapezoid is 'I'.
  • An outer trapezoid is 'O'.
  • A windward leeward with a finish after the last run is 'L'.
  • A windward leeward with a finish at the windward end of the course is 'W'.
  • A Sausage Triangle with a leeward finish is 'STL'.
  • A Sausage Triangle with a windward finish is 'STW'.
  • A Triangle Sausage with a leeward finish is 'TSL'.
  • A Triangle Sausage with a windward finish is 'TSW'.
  • When a spreader mark is used the course assignment is suffixed by 'A'.
  • When two windward marks are used for different fleets the course to the furthest mark is suffixed by 'E'.
  • When a slalom is used after the last run the course assignment is suffixed by 'S'.
