For use in sailing instructions below are most of the common varieties of course diagram. With each, a course table will be necessary, such as:
O2 Start - 1
- 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish
O3 Start - 1
- 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish
O4 Start -
1 - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3s/3p - 2 - 3p - Finish
The convention for assigning signals to courses is:
- The number relates to the number of beats in the course.
- An inner trapezoid is 'I'.
- An outer trapezoid is 'O'.
- A windward leeward with a finish after the last run is 'L'.
- A windward leeward with a finish at the windward end of the course is 'W'.
- A Sausage Triangle with a leeward finish is 'STL'.
- A Sausage Triangle with a windward finish is 'STW'.
- A Triangle Sausage with a leeward finish is 'TSL'.
- A Triangle Sausage with a windward finish is 'TSW'.
- When a spreader mark is used the course assignment is suffixed by 'A'.
- When two windward marks are used for different fleets the course to the furthest mark is suffixed by 'E'.
- When a slalom is used after the last run the course assignment is suffixed by 'S'.
